Persona Amatoris

Who is Amator?

A man of 58 years, I work in an academic environment in the fine city of Sheffield, England. A city of steel, cutlery, leafy Victorian suburbs and gritty but friendly people. For relaxation I walk in the countryside, indulge in reading and book-collecting, and try to keep my cat happy (I had two, but my favourite one died in mid-1998). As for what I look like, I'm no Adonis, though tall, slim, bearded (and with glasses) and withwhat the personals ads usually abbreviate to GSOH. Somewhat leftish in politics, favouring green policies (and trying to use a car as little as possible), humanist, or at least agnostic, in belief. I like clutter, have books, nick-nacks, boxes full of stuff, and things saved--just in case they come in handy--all over the house.

So what am I doing here?
Well, as I came across this opportunity to inform everyoone else about myself, I thought hmmmmm why not add to the cybernetic clutter on the Net, and be noticed for five seconds by surfers brave, or foolish, enough to look at my homepage? Also to tell everyone I'm available for chat, exchange of views or anything you like on the email, always supposing anyone thinks I look interesting enough to bother. If you have any Latin, by the way, you can figure out what my name means, and so guess at some of the chat I would be happy to engage in...

Any interests to speak of?
Yes, believe it or not. Apart from walking and reading aforesaid, I have amateur printing (with handset type) as a hobby and specialise in collecting antiquarian books and manuscripts (sorry, can't afford medieval ones!) because I'm fascinated with how literature and culture were transmitted in past times. I've also concentrated, in my research, on the work of a fellow called Boethius, a late Roman philosopher; OK so you've never heard of him, so I urge you, go away and look him up in an encyclopaedia, he wrote what became one of THE most influential books in Western civilisation and I'll enthuse about him to anyone who contacts me! He has a shrine in the church of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro in Pavia, Italy (another country I adore). I also do a bit of touring round Britain, taking in medieval sites etc, and I have a keen interest in archaeology--I've got my hands dirty (and strained my back digging) on a few excavations, notably in Trondheim, Norway, helping to investigate a Viking/medieval site. I also edit a small annual journal publishing articles about Yorkshire in the medieval period. So far, I guess you're thinking I'm a completely intellectual nerd, but not so; yes I'm a serious person though I like a good laugh, I watch more television than is good for me, I listen to assorted popular music as well as more serious stuff. Perhaps that's about it, no doubt there's much more that could be said but you don't want to know all that. If you have dropped by to look at this quite unprofessional homepage, thanks for your time--I hope you won't feel it was completely wasted. And if you want to say anything, or find out more, the electronic messenger will convey your thoughts to me.
